What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the scientific study of safety and efficiency in the working environment. It encompasses the way individuals stand, sit, and move while performing their duties at work.

Why is ergonomics important?

Most people spend a significant portion of their lives at work. If they aren’t working efficiently and safely, they’re at a higher risk for accidents, stress injuries and illness. For example, individuals with poor posture put unnecessary stress on parts of the neck and spine. Over time, this extra stress can lead to injuries, such as bulging or ruptured discs. Likewise, certain types of repetitive activities that involve the hands can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome if the worker doesn’t take steps to make the task safer for the hands and wrists. Other common conditions that may relate to bad working conditions include headaches, knee injuries, and chronic pain.

What makes a safe working environment?

From the perspective of ergonomics, a safe working environment is one that doesn’t raise the individual’s risk of injury. Chairs should support a healthy posture, and the individual should be careful to sit and stand in ways that don’t put unnecessary pressure on the spine. Individuals should also know how to bend, squat, and lift safely. In addition, individuals should be able to change positions frequently to prevent injuries related to remaining in a single position for an extended period.

What happens when a patient visits Better Body Solutions for ergonomics?

Better Body Solutions understands the importance of a safe, comfortable working environment for the health of the patient. When a patient visits Better Body Solutions for ergonomics, we will begin by taking time to learn about the patient’s working environment. The patient will provide information about their profession, the position in which they typically work, the tasks they perform regularly, and the equipment they use. We will review this information and give the patient tips for improving the working environment.
